Story by :icongreateastern1856::

Before long, Shadow and Cosmo had prepared a knapsack each, and were ready to head out to Tails' rescue. Shadow had managed to obtain a Chaos Emerald before they set off, but his trademark Chaos Control ability only had a limited range with the one Emerald, and to make matters worse, the only other railway route that went anywhere near Red Mountain, Speedlink 9, had been blocked due to a derailment. Instead, they had to walk it all the way to the tunnel.
Their journey took a lot longer than expected; even though Red Mountain was just twelve miles away, the route was so difficult that it took an hour just to cover one, and by the time evening drew in, they were only a quarter of the way there.
"We're going to have to make camp," said Shadow at last. "There's no way we'll be able to reach the tunnel before nightfall."
They stopped halfway along a ledge in the hillside, where Shadow soon managed to gather some wood and set a campfire going. But while they had brought along plenty of rations, Cosmo had decided against bringing a sleeping bag with her, just so that she didn't weigh herself down. Already the young seedrian was starting to regret her decision; it was so cold out that she couldn't seem to stop shivering as she tried in vain to make herself comfortable.
Shadow, who had rather wisely sat himself next to the fire, looked over his shoulder to see Cosmo wriggling about uncomfortably, occasionally blowing into her hands. He sighed and looked back to the fire unhappily; he didn't want Cosmo to suffer overnight, but he wasn't sure he wanted to put her at risk of being burned alive either.
"Poor thing," he thought. "That accident at the tunnel must have hit her really hard if she's letting herself go so cold like that."
He turned away from the fire and searched his knapsack until at last he found what Cosmo needed. Once he had removed and unfolded it, he gently draped it over her before returning to the nice, warm campfire.
Cosmo looked up, and was surprised to see a thick, warm blanket over her. Perplexed, she turned round to see what Shadow was doing; though he had his back to her, and was concentrating more on the fire than anything else, the open knapsack clearly indicated where it had come from. The young seedrian returned her gaze to the blanket, rather touched by what Shadow had done.
"That must be the first time Shadow's been this nice to me," she thought. "I guess I was pretty lucky I had someone like him around when I needed him most." She narrowed her eyes with worry as she stared out towards the mountain again; "If only I could say the same thing for Tails."
