Not the last hug

Shadow tried hard to think of how he could soothe Cosmo's feelings. He really couldn't see himself getting to Tails in time, but he couldn't bear to let the distressed seedrian down. Just then, it suddenly occurred to him; if he could use a new move he had been working hard to perfect over the last few weeks, then maybe there was still a chance for the trapped kitsune.
"Don't worry, Cosmo," he asserted. "I've got an idea, and I'm sure it'll work."
He then left the cabin and ordered everyone out of the way. Then, with a loud yell of "CHAOS DRILL!!!" he rolled himself into a spiky black ball and started to roll into the tunnel at breakneck speed. Cosmo peered out of the cabin and watched in an uncanny mixture of amazement and suspense as the black lifeform bore down on the rocks, an aura of Chaos energy radiating from his body; as soon as he reached them, he began to smash the rocks to pebbles as he drilled his way towards Tails and the Alpha Groundhog. From outside, the men cheered him on loudly.
Finally, just half an hour later, Shadow emerged from the now-clear tunnel carrying a weak, bruised, ailing Tails in his arms. Relieved and overjoyed, Cosmo burst out of the cabin and ran over to the fox and his rescuer, whereupon Shadow gently set him down on the ground.
"Oh, Tails," cried Cosmo, hugging him tight as she buried her face in his fur, "thank God you're alright!"
Tails hugged her back, letting loose a few tears. "Oh, Cosmo, I thought I'd never see you again," he sobbed, clinging onto her as if his whole life depended on it.
Shadow watched the two lovers embrace each other feverishly and gave them both a rare smile, glad that his gamble on the Chaos Drill move had paid off and that he had brought Tails back safe and sound.
It was Tails who broke the silence first. "How did you manage to get me out of there alive?" he asked, his voice still a little weak and raspy from all the dust he had breathed in.
"Shadow's new move was what saved the day, kid," smiled one of the miners. "That Chaos Drill of his worked like a charm!"
"And I'm sure glad it did," agreed Cosmo. "Shadow and I feared you might be dead before we reached you."
Tails smiled weakly. "You were nearly right, Cosmo," he replied. "By the time Shadow reached me, I was starting to go under. I didn't care at first, but then he told me how terrified you were for my safety, and suddenly the most important thing in the whole world was to live."
"It was the most important thing in the world to me too, Tails," said Cosmo fondly, and planted an affectionate kiss on his cheek.
